Known for his joyful faith and tireless service to the sick and the poor, Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati continues to inspire young people around the world. Moved by his witness, a prayer group in Switzerland decided to bring his life to the screen, creating a film that highlights the simplicity, depth, and joy of his holiness.<\/p>\n
Released just four months after Frassati\u2019s canonization, the film \u201cEin Leben f\u00fcr Andere\u201d (A Life for Others) premiered at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome, drawing an audience eager to encounter the newly canonized saint through cinema.<\/p>\n
Telling Frassati\u2019s Story on Screen<\/p>\n
The film is portrayed largely through the eyes of Pier Giorgio\u2019s sister, Luciana, with Swiss seminarian Nicolas Koch taking on the role of the saint. Koch explains that the production sought to capture the essential themes of Frassati\u2019s life, noting:<\/p>\n
\u201cIt’s a movie that tries to get some essential themes about the life of Pier Giorgio, especially his love for all the people. We can mention his family, we can mention the poor, we can say also politics, the young people, his friends.\u201d<\/p>\n
For Koch, embodying Frassati was a deeply personal experience. Reflecting on the saint\u2019s character, he says:<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was so cool to get to know a person who is extraordinarily normal. And that’s so inspiring because I think sometimes, at least in my life, I try to make extraordinary things. But I saw in him, well, it’s not always needed to make extraordinary things, but especially, to do them with love.\u201d<\/p>\n
Friendship, Faith, and a Living Miracle<\/p>\n
The screening in Rome was made even more meaningful by the presence of Wanda Gawronska, Pier Giorgio\u2019s niece, and Fr. Juan Manuel Guti\u00e9rrez, whose miraculous healing played a decisive role in Frassati\u2019s canonization in 2025. Fr. Juan\u2019s complete recovery from a torn Achilles tendon was attributed to Frassati\u2019s intercession.<\/p>\n
Recalling the experience, Fr. Juan shared:<\/p>\n
\u201cI needed to spend months in rest and then physiotherapy after the surgery. And to have a full recovery will take up to a year. The fact that before 9 days this was gone, it was unexplainable.\u201d<\/p>\n
He remembers the moment the surgeon confirmed the healing, saying:<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd after he examined me, he said, well, there is no hole, there is no tear, and there is no need for a surgery anymore. And when he said to me, ‘you must have someone up there looking after you’, that\u2019s when I connected everything.\u201d<\/p>\n
For Fr. Juan, the film\u2019s focus on friendship captures the heart of Frassati\u2019s witness. He hopes viewers will be inspired not only by Pier Giorgio\u2019s relationships with others, but above all by his friendship with God. As he reflects:<\/p>\n
\u201cI always describe my relationship with Pier Giorgio as one of those friendships that come casually into your life one day, but they end up changing your life forever. He’s a great friend and a great example to have. And I think that’s what friendships should be, right? Someone who inspires you to grow more as a human, as a man, as a Christian. And I think Pier Giorgio is all that for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
